Winery Direct: $20.50
Full disclaimer: This is a wine we buy a case of every year. I'm signed up for the newsletter and we eagerly await the release of the 8th Generation wines. Just recently, our mixed case of rosé and bubbles (that article will come up quickly I’m sure) arrived and we quickly cracked into it, chilling this on the first night.
This wine is somewhat unique being made of 100% Pinot Meunier grapes. Probably not something you've ever heard of but something you have most likely consumed in the past... Pinot Meunier is one of the three standard Champagne grapes, along with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It adds acidity, body and fruit flavours to a Champagne blend.
The clear, vivid deep pink colour gives you hints of what's to come. To say the nose is lively is a gross understatement. Your mouth immediately starts to water with the aromas of ruby red grapefruit, strawberry and raspberry and a very subtle, pleasant green note, like fresh cut grass.
The wine was left with skin contact for 24 hours lending to it's beautiful colour and intense flavours and aromas. Though dry, it fills your mouth with so much fresh fruit you'd think you detect some sweetness. The juicy grapefruit is prominent with red berries and a hint of tropical fruit. It's the well balanced acidity that makes this wine really difficult to put down.
Honestly, I can suggest some pairings like grilled vegetable salad or salmon with strawberry salsa but honestly, I like to chill it down, pull a chair up to the campfire and just enjoy this wine for exactly what it is... incredibly delicious.
I'd buy again, and again, and again...
