Cave Saint Desirat Syrah 2018
My sweet father brought this wine over for us shortly before Christmas. I L-O-V-E Syrah, and the snowy holiday season was calling for just this bottle! A curl up on the couch by the Christmas tree and sip away kind of night.
Deep purple in the glass, the nose erupted out with blackberry, cherry, juicy red plum, a candied violet and hints of gaminess and pepper. The wine was dry but the abundant fruit, namely cherry and blackberry, were front and center, with enough acidity to get the saliva going. White pepper and undertones of olive gave it body and meatiness. The finish was strong and the wine played well above it's pay grade. A bit of a show off at that price point; an excellent value.
If you've ever had cassoulet, with it's creamy beans, succulent duck confit and hearty, gamey sausage, then this wine is for you. It's a comfort food, meat centric wine thought if you went with mushroom duxelles and olive tapenade bruschetta, this Syrah would accompany that beautifully. We actually had it when my brother dropped off red wine braised short ribs and OH MY GOD... do it.
