Fitzpatrick Vineyards The Lookout Riesling 2019
January 4. A new year. The day I was supposed to go back to work after the holidays and it snowed enough to keep my sweet mother in law who lives about an hour away, at home. Which meant no childcare and therefore, a really long day for me. Thankfully, we had @freshprep coming so I didn’t have to think about dinner, just whipped up their Vietnamese Lemongrass Pork Bowl. And luckily, I had hit up @everythingwine and grabbed this Riesling which was a near perfect pairing for the dish! And lucky for me, I’ve got the Bachelor premier which goes pretty well with the Riesling too.
The balance of sweet and sour in this South Okanagan Riesling is on point. Long, cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks keeps the acidity fresh and fruit flavours prevalent. It poured pale lemon yellow in the glass with dancing gold flecks. Luscious tree fruit on the nose, green apple and pear, with notes of lime zest and a whisper of slate. On the palate the wine was just off dry and the tree fruit ripened with Bartlett pear, golden delicious apple, white peach and tart lemon curd. The acidity was spirited on the finish, with fresh hay and minerality complimenting the lemon.
Loved how this played off the fish sauce, chilis and fresh Thai basil flavours while the acidity cut through the sumptuousness of the lemongrass pork. Definitely bring this to the table the next time you are serving up Vietnamese flavours.
