Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé 2020

A lot of ripeness coming throug on this Cabernet Sauvignon rosé from South Africa. Not surprising given the growing conditions there... super hot! More heat = more sugar, bigger fruit flavours, higher alcohol. Which sums up this wine fairly accurately.

Right off the bat, the colour is brilliantly medium to dark pink. The nose is chock-full of ripe red fruit: cherries, raspberries, watermelon candy and floral notes. The body is medium, with medium acidity keeping it fresh on the palate and medium + alalcohol. Juicy cherry, strawberry, raspberry and red plum flavours build, layering rose, sweet cigar box and just a little salty, minerality. A pretty good value for a food friendly rosé.

I don't drink a lot of South African wine. I feel like what I see on the shelves are the extreme value brands and occasionally a much higher end. Not a lot of the middle ground making it's way all the way to the Vancouver area. Something I'd like to explore more given the incredible landscape and growing conditions in South Africa.

Would love to see this wine paired with something salty... spanikopita actually comes to mind. I think the garlic and feta would stand together beautifully with this Cabernet Sauvignon rosé. Or lamb chops flavoured with harissa. Let me know if you give this a try and what you pair it with! Tag @crushfoodandwine on Instagram!

Cheers!
