Sandhill Small Lots Two 2013
Been feeling like I'm not representing reds enough on here so went downstairs and pulled something that's been sitting patiently on the wine rack for a few years now. The Sandhill Small Lots Two.
Each year, the viticulturist and the winemakers from Sandhill find small vineyard blocks or even as little as one barrel, that is showing especially well. If they want to try something different, like lowering crop yields or different winemaking strategy, this is where they do that.
This Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc pours a rich deep plum colour, erring on black. It's dry, full bodied and aging beautifully with balanced fruit and oak, and well integrated, suede like tannins. Rich blueberry jam, blackberry, dark black cherry and chocolate mix well with the warm spice and smoke that come through gently as you savour the wine. It still maintains a good level of freshness while the aging process has softened the oak and tannin. This is a good time to drink it!
Red wine braised short rib served atop creamy, mashed potato and parsnip would be a scrumptious pairing for this rich, commanding flavour profile.
