Sunshine Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Sunshine Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Everything Wine: $17.99

Mid-October is here and so is the rain. It’s grey in Vancouver and actually snowing in the Interior. I need some sunshine in my life. Conveniently, it has shown up, on my way through Everything Wine, in the form of the Sunshine Bay Sauvignon Blanc.

Disclaimer: Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc juuuuust happens to be a favourite of mine but I’ll try not to be overly biased. It’s just that New Zealand, and Marlborough in particular, grows vibeantly high acidity, über green, intensely flavourful SBs. Geographically it sits at the Northern tip of the South Island, in a maritime climate and has more UV than other wine growing regions. So what does this mean? High UV allows the grapes to ripen while the cool maritime air and cooler evenings keep the acidity mouth wateringly high.

This Sunshine Valley Sauvignon Blanc is a prime example of just that. It pours so pale it’s almost crystal clear with hints of gold and green. The nose explodes with tropical fruits, citrus and green bell pepper. All the things you want in big, bold Marlborough white. The acidity in the wine is so fresh, so clean, it’s mouth filling, with intense passion fruit, guava, lime and capsicum. The finish is steely, fruit forward and lingering.

I may just buy a case.

This is one of those wines you can just drink in the tub by yourself but if you’re hungry, this wine makes a stand up pairing to a lot of foods. I would suggest a Thai salad with peanuts, cilantro and prawns. Or try these these Smoky Shrimp Tacos with Mango Cilantro Slaw. The fruit mango, green cilantro, and smoky ancho prawns will stand up to the boldness of this wine and the acidity will bring out the best in the food!!
